Deadpool and Wolverine is the third installment in the Deadpool trilogy and marks Deadpool’s arrival to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or more accurately and also sadly, Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. It is written by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells and Shawn Levy and directed by Shawn Levy, the director of Free Guy and The Adam Project. My opinion of this movie is not from the perspective of a comic book fan or an X-Men fan. I have watched the X-Men movies and both the fox Deadpool movies. I loved the Deadpool movies and I liked some of the X-Men movies. I am, though, in general, a huge Sci-Fi fan and naturally I love comic book movies too. My comic book exposure is limited to superhero movies, especially Marvel. So I was excited to see what they had cooked up for Deadpool’s big introduction to Marvel.
This is definitely the movie for comic book fans and old Fox X-Men fans. If you just want to see Wolverine and Deadpool in their comic-accurate suits, bickering, swearing and killing while cool music is playing in the background, then this is the movie for you and you probably have already watched the movie, and loved it. But since I am not familiar with comic books, my enjoyment largely depended on how good the story is, not the cameos, not accurate costumes. I have mixed feelings about this movie. They are mostly positive, but there are some things that I didn’t like.
First, I would like to talk about the news everyone is talking about online that it is going to bring back Marvel, revive Marvel etc. This is nonsense. What will bring back Marvel are Good Decisions-the type of decisions that made Marvel the biggest movie Franchise of the World. And the choice of expanding the Universe to a Multiverse doesn’t sound like a good decision to me. Here, “bigger is not always better” is evident. A story is interesting and attention-worthy because it is unique. When a new superhero movie is released, you don’t want its story to be the same as the previous movie; you want it to be unique. We want it to be special. But with Multiverse there are infinite versions of the same hero, the same villain, the same story and also there are infinite different stories of the same person. So, why is the one you just watched more special? It’s not. It is another inconsequential, tiny thread in this huge fabric of Multiverse. So, there is no sense of stake or any kind of danger to anyone. For example, let’s say your favorite character just died. But this is a multiverse movie, so you come across multiple versions of the same guy that has just died. There are, in fact, infinite versions of that character with the same exact problems. This diminishes the intensity of the emotional impact of the story. None of it matters anymore.
This problem also exists in Deadpool and Wolverine. We saw Logan sacrifice himself for someone he cared about in the 2017 movie and now in this movie there are a bunch of Wolverines with different faces and stories. So, why is what we saw any more important than what these infinite Wolverines go through? Also, there are a ton of Deadpools as well. And this does affect the overall emotional effect of the story. And as I said before, this is a movie for the comic book fans. Most of the emotional moments in the movie aren’t because of the story; they are because of the cameos and fan service. It is because you finally see Deadpool and Wolverine in their comic accurate costumes fighting each other and together.
Okay, since we’ve started already, let’s get all the negatives out of the way first. The main villain, Cassandra Nova, is inconsequential; Paradox is inconsequential as well, although the actor did a really good job. They are there just to create interesting situations for our heroes to solve. There is a new concept of Anchor Being that just comes out of nowhere, and it doesn’t make sense either.
Now, to the positives; despite all of its faults, it is still an incredibly fun movie. The intro credits slaughter scene is beautiful, disrespectful, uncomfortable, and really fucking awesome, and it is the trademark of Deadpool movies. Hugh Jackman is a treat to watch. There is a scene where Logan goes on a disgust and hatred filled rant about Deadpool. That was amazing acting by Mr. Jackman.
This movie also shows the Sociopathic side of Deadpool more than the predecessors. He gets two innocent people killed because of his stupidity and jealousy. There are a ton of jokes in the movie. Most of them do land as intended, and they are funny. And there is a hierarchy of superiority among all the Deadpools and it is determined by their Dick Size. Peterpool has the biggest, followed by Nicepool (R.I.P.), and then our Deadpool has the smallest of these three.
This is a good and really fun movie for anyone who is not a Marvel comic book or old X-men movies fan. If you are a fan, this movie was meant for you with all of its cameos and fan service, and you will find it great and amazing. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. But this movie definitely is not going to save or rescue Marvel from mediocrity if the next decisions aren’t good.
Thank you!
