Gravity Falls

Gravity Falls PosterSo, I watched Gravity Falls, and what a journey it was! I didn’t expect to finish it at first because during the first four or five episodes, it was kind of annoying. I remember there was a Halloween episode, and it was really frustrating how the characters did stupid things for stupid reasons. Their lives would be in danger, and they’d be worried about their dates or any other stupid thing. I guess I really leaned into the reality of the show a bit too much. And I shouldn’t have, considering it is a kids show and the main characters, Mable and Dipper, are pre-teens. But, once you get a hang of things, it’s a great experience.

I get that it is a really smart, funny and well-written fantastic mystery show but it is surprisingly heartfelt and it has some really good life lessons for kids even for adults. And it got me once during the second season.

I glossed over the fact that it’s a really good mystery show. It deserves a lot of praise just for that because there aren’t many mystery movies or series being made these days. The most recent mystery movie that I loved was Knives Out (the first one), but that didn’t have the sci-fi aspect to it that Gravity Falls has. The town Gravity Falls is a character in itself. It is filled with all kinds of wacky stuff like different monsters, time-travelling agents, the undead, gnomes, overly positive cringy unicorns, multidimensional beings.

Speaking of multidimensional beings, the main bad guy is Bill, an all-powerful, sassy, bipolar, triangular being. I have never seen a bad guy who flips from a friendly, jolly guy to a raging, frightening monster in a moment. As the show progresses, all the dots start to connect, and we get an emotionally and intellectually satisfying ending. I felt a sense of grief inside when it ended, probably because I was invested in these characters and the world so much. And the characters being very likable contributes to that a lot. Every character in the show except Bill redeems themselves in the end. All the characters that were annoying in the beginning became really likable in the end. And this includes all the supporting antagonists too.

And above all that this show is very funny. There are some childish, irritating jokes, courtesy of being a children’s show. But it has a ton, I mean a ton of jokes for grown-ups. And a lot of those are meta jokes referencing real life, pop culture and movies. All of these things combined make a wholesome, earnest, funny, mysterious show that I won’t forget soon.

Man, I already miss Gravity Falls.

Well, Thank you for reading.
